Week Three

Hello there,

Week three…how time flies! This week the students have been learning all about different climates around the world. We looked at what climate is and we used a map of the world to investigate the different climates around the earth. We learnt about polar climates, dry climates, tropical climates, moderate climates and continental climates.

This week we made our very own barometer. A barometer shows us what the weather will be like. It can show us whether there is a high air pressure in the atmosphere, which indicates a fine day, or a low air pressure in the atmosphere, which indicates a rainy day.

In Mathematics we have been looking at 3D shapes and their faces, edges and corners. We made our own cubes and rectangular prisms using match sticks and play dough. We again looked at time and refreshed our memory on ‘half past the hour’. We also measured the height of different objects around the room and looked at how 100cm is equivalent to one meter. We also measured the height of each student and arranged ourselves in order from shortest to tallest. We looked at chance and data language such as; possible, impossible, certain, might, likely and unlikely and played a game involving dice and coins.

During Literacy, we have been continuing on with our guided reading groups, modelled reading tasks where we watch Miss Renee de-code the text and learn different strategies to use if we are stuck on a word such as; look at the illustrations, read on, find a little word in the big word or sound it out! This week we started to write our very own narratives about wild weather. Our stories must be interesting and hook other readers in. We have been using our writing wall to help us through this process. This week we looked the letter ‘z’ and how it changes. We have been practicing really hard with our handwriting throughout the week.

In Art, we looked at warm and cool colours and how they make us feel. Warm colours make us feel hot like we are in the desert while cool colours make us feel like we are in a rainforest. We explored these colours with paint and created our own postcards!

We have our art piece on auction this Friday evening. Feel free to make a bid on this artwork that the children have created. Thank you to those parents who have been dedicating their time in the classroom - your assistance is extremely appreciated!

Miss Renee ☺
