Hello there,
Week three…how time flies! This week the students have been learning all about different climates around the world. We looked at what climate is and we used a map of the world to investigate the different climates around the earth. We learnt about polar climates, dry climates, tropical climates, moderate climates and continental climates.
This week we made our very own barometer. A barometer shows us what the weather will be like. It can show us whether there is a high air pressure in the atmosphere, which indicates a fine day, or a low air pressure in the atmosphere, which indicates a rainy day.
In Mathematics we have been looking at 3D shapes and their faces, edges and corners. We made our own cubes and rectangular prisms using match sticks and play dough. We again looked at time and refreshed our memory on ‘half past the hour’. We also measured the height of different objects around the room and looked at how 100cm is equivalent to one meter. We also measured the height of each student and arranged ourselves in order from shortest to tallest. We looked at chance and data language such as; possible, impossible, certain, might, likely and unlikely and played a game involving dice and coins.
During Literacy, we have been continuing on with our guided reading groups, modelled reading tasks where we watch Miss Renee de-code the text and learn different strategies to use if we are stuck on a word such as; look at the illustrations, read on, find a little word in the big word or sound it out! This week we started to write our very own narratives about wild weather. Our stories must be interesting and hook other readers in. We have been using our writing wall to help us through this process. This week we looked the letter ‘z’ and how it changes. We have been practicing really hard with our handwriting throughout the week.
In Art, we looked at warm and cool colours and how they make us feel. Warm colours make us feel hot like we are in the desert while cool colours make us feel like we are in a rainforest. We explored these colours with paint and created our own postcards!
We have our art piece on auction this Friday evening. Feel free to make a bid on this artwork that the children have created. Thank you to those parents who have been dedicating their time in the classroom - your assistance is extremely appreciated!

Week Two
What a productive week we have had here in 2M!
This week was NAIDOC week. NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. We have all been busy entering a colouring in competition and listening to our daily questions that help us to celebrate the Indigenous culture.
This week in Science we have looked at the four seasons, why we have the four seasons, which months are in which season and what makes them unique.
Did you know that it takes one year for the Earth to rotate around the sun?
We also learnt that the Earth’s axis is tilted and this is what gives us the four seasons.
We had a lot of fun designing clothes that we would wear for each seasons.
We have had a lot of fun in Numeracy this week. We were introduced to ‘half past the hour’ and practiced this using our class clocks. When the students are at home, we have encouraged them to have a go at telling the time on their own. We have looked closely at subtracting two digit numbers and kept practicing our money recognition, while focusing on giving and receiving change.
During Literacy rotations we refreshed our understanding of nouns, adjectives and verbs. This week our sounds were p, pp, and r, rr and wr. We became book detectives this week and found these sounds in books. We have been looking closely at the structure of a narrative, as we will soon be drafting, editing and publishing our own stories! We have been doing lots of modelled, guided, shared and independent reading, and as a class we have been working on our comprehension strategies. We found out that it can help us remember a story when we stop and retell the story so far.
Thank-you to all the parent helpers and volunteers that dedicate their time in the classroom, we really appreciate it!

Week One
Students, Parents and Caregivers,
What a fantastic and busy week we have had!
This week we have been introduced to our unit ‘Weather’. First we looked at what we already knew about weather. As a class, we brainstormed all the different facts we knew about weather. We then looked at different weather types that we have experienced and different weather types that we can experience. We have observed the weather each morning and recorded this on our daily chart. We also broke up into groups and looked at weather symbols in the newspaper. After this, we became weather reporters ourselves by creating our own weather symbols and writing our own weather reports.
We have been enjoying our four groups during our Literacy rotations, and we have been focusing on de-coding the text, guided reading, independent reading and comprehension. We have been using our new ‘PMI’ tables. This is where we find something we liked about the book, something we didn’t like about the book, and something we found interesting about the book. Next week, we will start to write our own narratives about weather that we will publish into a book.
In Mathematics, we have been revising money, fact families and our addition and subtraction sums. This week, we set up a shop called ‘2M’s shopping centre’ and this gave us the opportunity to practice our money recognition skills and money addition and subtraction skills as we looked at the correct change. This was really fun, and was enjoyed by all.
This week, Miss Renee has been modelling our ‘News and Weather’ presentations. Next week the students will start to do their own presentations, please double check when your child is scheduled to share. We are looking forward to sharing and listening to different news items and the weather forecast.

Welcome back!
Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 3, 2011. We are very excited to be back, and we are looking forward to the busy term ahead of us. This term 2M will be learning all about ‘Weather’. We will be looking at the different types of weather, how weather affects our lives, severe weather phenomena such as droughts, floods and cyclones, and how this impacts on communities, the accurate prediction of weather patterns and interpretation of weather forecasts and how important they are to our economy and lifestyle.
This blog is a way for families at home to keep up-to-date with the learning that is taking place in our classroom. We will upload photos, videos and share what we have learnt each week in this blog. This blog was created to make the home and school connection easier, and we hope that you enjoy the usefulness that this blog will bring.
Enjoy!
